Simply put: any activity that benefits the community where people from different generations interact and work toward a common goal, resulting in shared learning, enhanced quality of life and stronger communities.
Palm Beach County is home to people of all ages and experiences seeking to make a difference.
Even in a down economy, we can find new ways to better connect different generations, from older adults with vast experience to techno-savvy Millenials to the numerous opportunities in this county. How can nonprofits and the community at-large engage these diverse generations effectively in volunteering and civic engagement?
That was the focus of today's "Generation Connection" seminar hosted by the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. National expert and keynote speaker Nancy Henkin and a panel of local nonprofit leaders explored this issue in depth.
Why does it matter? What does it mean for my community?
Palm Beach County is the 11th oldest county in the nation. These unique demographics provide a unique opportunity to tap in to the wealth of experience available right here.
Our communities have challenges and community members of all ages and stages can make a difference by becoming engaged in addressing local issues.
Bringing generations together builds caring relationships and strengthens the fabric of our community.
Utilizing the knowledge of elder adults and the enthusiasm and technical skills of the younger generations together can help solve issues in our community.
Volunteerism is stable even in this down economy and people (young and old) who are seeking jobs are seeking opportunities to expand job skills
Intergenerational civic engagement helps remove any negative stereotypes that exist between generations by addressing those stereotypes head-on and providing hands on experience.
