Today PEACE leaders unveiled the group's white paper on wage theft, entitled - "Towards a Moral Workplace and a Moral Economy." The authors are Fr. John D'Mello, parochial vicar at St. Ann Catholic Church and member of the PEACE Executive Committee; Maxine Cheesman, member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church and member of the PEACE Board of Directors; and Tom Blackburn, member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church ad member of the PEACE Board of Directors.

Tug of war with dollarThe white paper is in response to a white paper recently published by a law firm Sniffen & Spellman, entitled "Wage Theft Ordinances: An Unnecessary and Redundant Remedy for PEACE Employees."

PEACE could not disagree more. The group outlines its arguments around why - touching on the inadequacy of the laws in place, the reality of the current system, and the moral and economic basis for the group's position.

On Monday night, the group will turn out 2,000 community residents for its annual Nehemiah Action Assembly. On the topic of wage theft, the group plans on seeking commitments from the County Commissioners on the Ordinance, conditional upon the fate of a bill in the state legislature that would pre-empt the ability of local governments to pass such Wage Theft Ordinances.
