Newest PEACE Endeavor Unveiled at Rally: Wage Theft
On Monday, March 22nd, 402 congregational leaders crowded into Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in West Palm Beach for the PEACE organization's annual Rally - a preliminary event to the yearly Nehemiah Action Assembly. One of the issues covered was Wage Theft - and specifically what is planned for the April 19th Nehemiah Action. Wage Theft is the group's newest area of focus - and as such was a highlight of the evening.
The group intends on asking the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners to begin the process of adoption of a countywide wage theft ordinance.
Such an ordinance would address the widespread problem faced by far too many day laborers and service workers in Palm Beach County - wage theft. Wage theft occurs when a worker receives less (and often - nothing) of what was promised. In February, a wage theft ordinance was passed in Miami-Dade County; PEACE hopes for the same for Palm Beach County.
Thus far - Commissioners Santamaria, Koons, and Vana have all committed to attend. Representatives are working diligently to confirm the attendance of the other four Commissioners.
Those gathered were those who had made commitments to be a part of the group's Network - which involves attending four big Assemblies, and bringing at least 3 others to the annual Nehemiah Action. The report on Wage Theft was intended to inform and motivate those gathered, so that they were well-equipped to fulfill their responsibility to bring at least 3.
1,500 community residents are expected to attend the April 19th Nehemiah Action, and are looking forward to hearing from their Commissioners.
