While the number of children affected with autism continues to rise, Scripps scientists in Jupiter, FL have uncovered a new gene that they believe could be a significant contributor to the leading known cause of the disease.
The gene, known as FMR4, may contribute to the development of fragile X syndrome, the most common cause of inherited mental retardation, including such autistic-like behaviors as
- social anxiety,
- poor eye contact, and
- hand biting.
